I got pregnant in 2019 when we were living in New York. We had been there 6 years and right up until then, I had never thought we would leave. As soon as I got pregnant, I felt every cell + fibre in my body yearn for home. For space, for green fields, clean, fresh air, wilderness... something NYC doesn't have too much of!
Now - for someone who relied heavily on a self-care diet of Martinis and Oysters - I had to find new ways to relax, relieve stress and get my kicks. Thank F*ck for Massage! Don't get me wrong, it's not like i'd never had a massage before... but during pregnancy, I learnt to enjoy the whole experience in a really mindful way. Everything felt heightened. I noticed the scents and sounds more; the pace and depth of my breath; the comfort and discomfort in my body; where my mind was at and where it journeyed to. Most powerfully, I let myself switch off for a bit - and gave myself and the bump over to someone else for an hour; allowing myself to feel truly held.
So needless to say, I am a big advocate of massage -- especially during pregnancy. Come to my clinic today and get 25% off your first treatment.
During pregnancy our joints, muscles and entire bodies can get tense and sore from growing (and carrying) another human inside of us for 9 months! Massage is a perfect way to relieve some of that tension and heaviness - as well as aiding the circulatory and lymphatic systems, to ensure a healthy flow of blood to mother and baby.
Every cell in our body is working overtime to nurture and support the growth of our baby, so energy levels can also feel a little depleted; receiving Reiki at this time is also a great way to relax + get a much needed natural boost of universal energy!
In one study, pregnant woman massage twice weekly for 5 weeks experienced less anxiety and less leg and back pain. They reported better sleep and improved moods, and their labour had fewer complications, including fewer premature births. (Field et al. 1999)
Now, personally I don't know anyone who could afford a massage TWICE A WEEK, (Beyonce maybe?!), but nevertheless, the research goes to show that massage is a safe way to relieve some prenatal aches and pains, while lifting your spirits (sans Gin!)
